Mahavica Viewpoint – Where the Sky Meets Vinodol

📍 Location: For those chasing panoramas, the route to Mahavica is as much part of the experience as the view itself.

From Rijeka—or anywhere along the A6 motorway—take the exit toward Križišće. Then follow signs inland, through the valley town of Tribalj, where the road begins to weave into the slopes of Vinodol. Once you pass Tribalj and head deeper inland, the route takes you along the Antovo–Lič road — one of those narrow, old-fashioned roads where every turn feels like a hidden discovery. From Dalmatia (Split, Zadar, Šibenik): Head north on the A1 highway and exit near Novi Vinodolski or Crikvenica. Instead of continuing straight on the fast road, take the old inland route toward Tribalj. If you’re coming from Istria (Pula, Rovinj, Poreč), sross over Učka via the tunnel, then descend toward Rijeka. From there, leave the main E65 coastal road and switch to the smaller inland roads that cut across Gorski Kotar toward Tribalj. It’s a mix of mountain turns and sudden sea views — pure Istrian-to-Kvarner magic. From Zagreb (and continental Croatia): Take the A6 highway toward Rijeka, then exit near Fužine or Oštrovica. From here, skip the faster roads and drop onto the old mountain route leading down into Vinodol.

Keep your speed gentle, because from Tribalj onwards, the road transforms: narrow, winding, and flanked by steep rocky walls. You’ll travel along the old Antovo–Plase route, stepping away from trunk roads and into a quieter realm of stone and forest. This is not a drive built for haste—halfway, you may even wonder if you’re on the right track—but that’s when the mountain opens up, and Mahavica appears like a secret waiting to be unveiled.

At about 781 meters above sea level, a small, designated turn-off appears—parking space, a modest trail, a few benches. You’ve arrived at one of the most breathtaking overlooks in Vinodol, where sea and sky, mountains and meadow, all meet in a single, unforgettable sweep.

Mahavica isn’t easy to reach — and that’s why it stays with you. The road winds between towering cliffs and rocky slopes of Kozak, and every turn reveals more of the wild landscape. When you finally arrive, the panorama of Vinodol unfolds in full majesty, raw and unforgettable.

Tip: Since this is a country road, there isn’t much traffic, and because of the road’s condition, driving fast isn’t really an option. When we were there during the summer months, we didn’t come across any other cars at all. Still, we wouldn’t recommend speeding – plus, taking it slow lets you enjoy the views and the atmosphere along the way.

Tip: You can reach the viewpoint by bike, simply following the marked Trail 300. The route combines gentle climbs, a few rolling sections, and longer descents, all with plenty of beautiful scenery along the way. Our tip: take it slow – Trail 300 is meant to be enjoyed at a relaxed pace so you don’t miss the views.
