📍 Location: Rječina Canyon Viewpoint, just above the canyon between Rijeka and Grobnik
If you’re coming from Rijeka city center, simply head northeast following the D3 road towards Grobnik. After just a few minutes of driving uphill, the road begins to open panoramic views of the canyon. The viewpoint itself is located near the village of Vele Grobnik, right by the main road, with small places to safely stop the car.
From Zagreb, take the A6 motorway toward Rijeka, exit at Čavle, and continue along the D3 road toward the city. Very quickly, you’ll reach the edge of the canyon, where this viewpoint opens up.
🔭 What You’ll See
🌉 The striking bridge over the Rječina Canyon, juxtaposed with Rijeka’s skyline in the distance.
🌿 The deeply carved canyon and green, forested slopes descending toward the riverbed — a characteristic karst phenomenon.
🏞️ The Rječina canyon itself is a protected natural area (since 1985), with marked trails such as the “Šetnica uz Rječinu” (Walk along the Rječina) that run from Trsat to the river source.
🏡 Hilltop houses and village outlines perched above the ravine.
⛰️ Učka Mountain rising behind the city in the backdrop.
⏰ Best Time to Visit
☀️ Clear mornings when the canyon walls are kissed by light.
🌇 Late afternoon/evening when the city and canyon soften in warm hues.
✨ Why Visit?
This viewpoint offers a unique vantage point where nature’s raw power meets urban presence. You see the deep cuts of the karst river, the forested slopes, bridges spanning the canyon — and all this within sight of Rijeka’s buildings. The nearby “Šetnica uz Rječinu” trail enhances the experience for hikers who want to explore the canyon corridor more.
