Vukovoj Viewpoint – Klenovnik Hills

📍 Location: High above Podravina, on the slopes of Klenovnik, right next to the small St. Vuk chapel in Vukovoj (Municipality of Klenovnik).

From Varaždin: Leave the city heading southwest toward Maruševec. From there, follow the signs for Klenovnik – the road winds through small villages and farmland, gradually climbing toward the hills. As you get closer, you’ll notice vineyards and orchards lining the road. The drive takes about 25–30 minutes.

From Zagreb: Take the A4 motorway toward Varaždin, then connect onto the local road network leading to Maruševec and onward toward Kalnik.

From Međimurje or Slovenia: Cross toward Varaždin, then continue south toward Maruševec and follow the Kalnik signs.

The road is narrow and climbs steadily, with several switchbacks through forest and vineyards. Don’t be surprised if it feels like you’re driving “to nowhere”—after a few bends you’ll see a small roadside pull-off with a sign marking Vidikovac Vukovoj. That’s where you can park.

🔭 What You’ll See

🗼 20 m tower with 200 steps – climb to the top for a full 360° panorama.

🌄 South: Rolling hills of Hrvatsko Zagorje.

🏔️ East: The ridge of Ivanščica.

🌾 North: The wide Drava plain, and on clear days, even the Alps.

🔭 A telescope at the top brings villages, vineyards, and historic landmarks into sharp focus.

🏰 Clear views of Klenovnik Castle, the largest castle in Croatia, where Croatian Parliament sessions were once held in the 16th century.

Best Time to Visit

🌅 Sunset: the cliffs glow orange and the valley turns golden.

🍇 Harvest Season: vineyards full of life, adding color and atmosphere to the slopes.

Bonus for viewpoint

⛪ At the base of the viewpoint stands St. Vuk chapel, the southernmost church in Europe dedicated to this saint.🌸 In its courtyard grows the protected flower black pasque flower (crna sasa) – once thought extinct, rediscovered here in Vukovoj.🪨 Next to the tower stretches a striking rocky ridge, adding to the dramatic setting.
