Rijeka is a city that is best understood when you see it from above. And even better when you see it from above during carnival.
Because then, beneath you, you don’t just see the sea, the port, and the rooftops. You see colorful parades, masks, music, and that special energy that makes Rijeka in February (or March) something completely different. Louder, more joyful, yet still itself.
If you’re already in Rijeka for the carnival or planning to come, here’s how to combine the city’s viewpoints with the carnival story into one perfect day.

Start in Rijeka city center at Korzo:
- First stop: Sveti Križ viewpoint
- Second stop Trsat with Trsat Castle and viewpoints

- Bonus return to the city for carnival festivities
Everything is close, and all is doable on foot or with a short ride on the city bus, which is free on carnival day.
☀️Morning at Sveti Križ, calm before the carnival madness
Start your day above the city at Sveti Križ viewpoint. While the city is still quiet and the masks are just getting ready, you’ll feel like Rijeka is still asleep.
Take a short walk to the viewpoint and enjoy the panorama over Kvarner Bay and the western part of the city – perfect for a gentle start. On a sunny morning, you’ll see the port, the boats, and the city slowly waking up.
After that, head down to the Rijeka Astronomical Centre. Even if you don’t go inside, a coffee on the terrace with the view is worth it. This is the perfect contrast to carnival: calm, fresh air, and a moment of peace before a day full of masks and festivities.
🎭Midday in Trsat, history, views, and carnival vibes
The next stop is Trsat, a place that Rijeka carries in its heart. The climb up the Trsat stairs might sound demanding, but the carnival atmosphere gives you extra energy.
At the top you’ll find Trsat Castle, several viewpoints over the city and the sea, and the feeling of being above it all while still in the center of the action.
From Trsat, Rijeka looks especially beautiful during carnival. Colorful, lively, playful. If you’re lucky, you’ll hear music from the streets drifting up, or at least the scent of carnival doughnuts. 🍩
Take a pause here, snap some photos, and maybe enjoy a short break at one of the cafes – carnival is a marathon, not a sprint.
🌇Golden hour at Fortica, Rijeka under the masks
As the day comes to an end, make your way to Fortica viewpoint at the 11th Station of the Cross. This is one of those spots where people instinctively go quiet.
During carnival, the view is even more special. The city below glows while you know a party is happening down there, lasting late into the night.
If you arrive about an hour before sunset, you’ll get warm light over the city, a panorama of the entire Kvarner, and perfect conditions for photos of Rijeka in its full glory.
🎉Evening back in the city, time for carnival
After the viewpoints, it’s time to return to the streets. Korzo, 128th Brigade Square, and the surrounding streets are alive.
Masked people, laughter, music, the smell of food, and that familiar feeling: it’s carnival in Rijeka, and for a few days, anything goes.
