Viewpoint Mađerkin breg

If you’re looking for an idea for a weekend escape or a one-day trip from Zagreb, let me ask you one simple question:
When was the last time you stood in one place, looking out over five countries – with a glass of wine in your hand?

If the answer is “never” or “way too long ago”, it’s time you discovered Mađerkin breg, the best viewpoint in the entire Međimurje region.

Mađerkin breg – a place where the view steals the show

You know those places people keep coming back to, even after they’ve visited ten times already? Mađerkin breg is exactly that kind of place. We’ve only been once so far, but we already know we’ll be back – many times. In spring, in summer, in the fog, at sunset… I truly believe every visit feels different and special in its own way.

The viewpoint is located above the village of Robadje, just a few minutes from Štrigova, and even the drive there feels like a small ritual. Winding roads, vineyards, rolling hills and tiny villages where time seems to slow down – or stop completely. The last few hundred meters are gravel, but don’t worry. That’s just the introduction to what’s waiting for you.

Once you climb the wooden tower (27 meters high, 104 steps – yes, I counted 😄), you’ll immediately understand the local saying:
“From here, you can see in all directions.”
And it’s not an exaggeration. Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Austria and Slovakia – all right there in front of you. The vineyards below look like green waves rolling all the way to the horizon.

How I’d plan the perfect day (from Zagreb)

👉 Leave Zagreb around 8:00 AM
Take the highway towards Čakovec, then continue slowly towards Štrigova. It’s about 2–2.5 hours of driving, but trust me – this is not a trip to rush.

👉 First stop: Štrigova
A short walk through the town, a coffee, and a view of St. Jerome’s Church. If you enjoy wine (and who doesn’t?), you’re in the right place – this region truly lives and breathes wine.

👉 Mađerkin breg
Park the car, walk through the vineyards, climb the tower. On a sunny day – pure magic. At sunset – you’ve hit the jackpot.
Along the way, stop by the small wine houses and taste local wines. Don’t skip Pušipel – fresh, dry and incredibly easy to drink. Perfect with that view.

👉 Lunch
A heartfelt recommendation: meso z tiblice (traditional preserved pork), homemade bread and Međimurje layer cake. If you see a sign that says “homemade”, don’t overthink it – stop. Food here is still made with soul.

👉 Easy afternoon
Cycling trails, short walks, another viewpoint, or simply sitting and staring at the hills. You know that feeling when you don’t need anything else but the view? Exactly that.

👉 Back to Zagreb in the evening
A little tired, pleasantly full of wine and cake, but with your head completely reset.

Why Mađerkin breg?

Because it’s not just “another viewpoint”.
It’s a place where you truly understand what makes Međimurje special – small, gentle, welcoming. People still stop to chat, offer you a glass of wine, ask where you’re from.

And the view?
The kind that makes you fall silent. And that might be the best recommendation of all.

If you’re looking for a simple, stress-free trip, without overplanning – but full of feeling – Mađerkin breg is a sure bet.

So…
When are we going? 🍷🌄
